For a railway operator, bus network or tramway, managing passenger information is no longer a nice to have: it has become a criterion for satisfaction and operational performance. In this article, we review the trends for 2025, the European MMTIS regulation and, above all, concrete actions to improve your system.

Why is passenger information strategic in 2025?

94% of European passengers consult at least one digital source before going to the station or stop: mobile apps, social media, voice assistants or dynamic displays. It is therefore impossible to rely solely on static displays.

The 2023 revision of the MMTIS delegated regulation requires real-time data to be made available, including accessibility and the possibility of taking bicycles on board. For railway stations, Implementing Regulation 2023/1694 specifies tactile signage, screen height and the proportion of PRM spaces receiving information.

A reliable passenger information system reduces demand at ticket counters and improves flow. The SNCF estimates that requests for assistance at stations have fallen by 18% since the roll-out of IENA, its new passenger information system. In 2024, thanks to Affluences' computer vision algorithms, passenger flow data will be added to this passenger information system.

Technological trends in passenger information

Unified multichannel

Ensures consistent messaging across all information dissemination platforms: web and mobile applications, platform screens, push SMS, etc.

Real-time data

No more fixed timetables; data is now disseminated to the nearest 10 seconds.

Passenger numbers

By displaying the load or occupancy rate per car, operators can improve passenger distribution on platforms and in trains to optimise station dwell times and improve passenger comfort.

Accessibility by design

High-quality passenger information must be understandable by everyone, including people with reduced mobility and non-English speakers. Inclusivity means complying with standards such as WCAG AA, including audio and tactile signage, and using standardised pictograms.

In 2025, passenger information will reflect the quality of your service: by making it reliable, real-time and inclusive, you will improve satisfaction, optimise your flows and anticipate future regulatory requirements.

How can Affluences support the development of your passenger information?

Affluences develops counting solutions for transport to measure load rates or occupancy in transport infrastructure.

These solutions are autonomous and independent of the Operations Support System, based on sustainable and interoperable technologies and a 100% cloud-based system hosted in France that is resilient and future-proof.

Thanks to the data visualisation platform, you can easily manage all your lines:

  • Check the load rate of your vehicles in real time and respond with appropriate measures in the event of incidents.

  • Adjust passenger information according to your decisions to guide passengers where you want them to go.

  • Accurately measure peak passenger numbers by line, train or period to implement new measures to manage them better.

  • Regulate your transport services and optimise your network to improve passenger comfort!

In 2021, Affluences won the 3rd edition of the Passenger Information Challenge launched by Île-de-France Mobilités and the Île-de-France Region on the theme of ‘Supporting passengers as they return to transport’!
